Itinerary suggestion - Red Desert Adventure

WHEN TO TRAVEL?

Namibia can be recommended for year round travel. Temperatures remain at their most comfortable during our spring and summer with blue skies and good game viewing opportunities, however there can be a chill in the air at nightfall. Rain tends to fall during November to March, this usually occurs as heavy thunderstorms which often clear quickly.

“Discover the rugged beauty of Southern Namibia’s famous deserts. From the oldest desert on earth to the highest sand dunes, the scenery is as stunning as it is surreal. Whether travelling with a guide or as a self-drive adventure, you’ll be certain of a holiday of a lifetime.”

Marianne Grimshaw - Africa Specialist

Day 1

Board your overnight flight to Windhoek, Namibia.

Day 2

Upon arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, Windhoek, either collect your rental car or meet your driver and head to  the red sand dunes of the Kalahari where you spend your first night.
Overnight stay: Kalahari

Day 3

Make an early start as you journey south to the Fish River Canyon, the second largest in the world after the Grand Canyon. En route, you may like to visit the bizarre rock formations at the ‘Giants Playground’ and the Quivertree Forest, whose branches are used by the San (Bushmen) to make quivers for their arrows.
Overnight stay: Fish River Canyon

Day 4

Don’t forget your camera today! The mighty Fish River Canyon falls away to staggering depths of 500m and provides the most breathtaking views. Formed millions of years ago when the valley bottom collapsed due to movements in the earth’s crust, this amazing natural wonder is one of the finest in Africa. Refresh yourself with a visit to Ai-Ais for a swim in the natural hot springs.
Overnight stay: Fish River Canyon

Day 5

Drive to the coast to the small harbour town of Luderitz which sits nestled between the Atlantic and the desert. Little has changed here over the past century, the town remaining the same in both size and appearance, this despite a flurry of prosperity in the early 20th century when diamonds were discovered here.
Overnight stay: Luderitz

Day 6

Spend a relaxing day in Luderitz. Admire its colonial buildings, including the Art Deco Goerke House which sits on Diamond Hill overlooking the town. Dolphins, seals and penguins can often be spotted in the bay, or why not take to the water on one of the many boat trips available? A main attraction whilst in Luderitz is Kolmanskop Ghost Town, informative guided tours take visitors around this former bustling diamond town.
Overnight stay: Luderitz

Day 7

Set off for the dramatic sand dunes of Sossusvlei, stopping en route for a memorable night at a traditional sheep farm and some tasty home cooked cuisine.
Overnight stay: Helmeringhausen

Day 8

Continue on your drive to the beautiful Sossusvlei area of the Namib Desert which lies within the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Spend an unforgettable two nights in the famous red sand dunes. Overnight stay: Sossusvlei

Day 9

Rise early to climb the largest sand dunes in the world, some more than 300m tall, and watch a magnificent sunrise over the desert. Spend the morning enjoying your amazing surroundings and exploring the Dead Vlei, an ancient river pan housing 900 year old scorched tree trunks.
Overnight stay: Sossusvlei

Day 10

Leaving the dunes behind, drive via the Kuiseb Canyon to the Atlantic coastal town of Swakopmund, where you spend two nights in Namibia’s premier coastal resort.
Overnight stay: Swakopmund

Day 11

Swakopmund is the adventure capital of Namibia; a range of excursions and activities are available here from golfing to boat cruises. Or you may choose to spend a lazy day, relaxing in one of the many restaurants, cafes, art galleries and museums in the town. Cape Cross, one of the world's largest and most impressive seal colonies is easily accessible on a day trip.
Overnight stay: Swakopmund

Day 11

Todays driving takes you back to Windhoek, arriving in time for a spot of shopping in the local curio shops before spending your final evening in one of the many restaurants in the area.
Overnight stay: Windhoek

Spend a relaxing day in the capital ahead of your evening flight back to the UK.

Morning arrival back to the UK.

Extend your trip

Why not extend your tour with a trip to Namibia’s fascinating and remote Skeleton Coast, so called because of the numerous ship-wrecks in the area. Flights can be arranged from either Swakopmund or Windhoek. Please contact us for details.
